What is Colourstart?
Colourstart is a ready-to-use, convenient patch test to screen for a potential allergy to the chemical para phenylenediamine (PPD) found in hair colorants.
To reduce the risk of experiencing an allergic reaction to hair colour most colour manufacturers recommend screening for allergy by using an Allergy Alert Test (AAT) on the skin.
Colourstart can be used instead of the AAT to test for allergy to PPD.
How often should I use Colourstart?
The test should only be used once if you are using the same hair colour product but may be repeated if you are switching to another product.
How do I buy Colourstart?
Colourstart is available from hair professionals in the UK only and is used by Avant Garde. Once you have set up your Colourstart passport successfully, we will send out your testing kit.
Do not use Colourstart if you:
- Are under 16 years of age.
- Suspect or know that you are allergic to PPD or any of the other ingredients in this test.
- Have active dermatitis on your skin (e.g. redness, swelling, itching).
- Have previously experienced an allergy to hair colorant.
- Are pregnant or breast-feeding.
- Are taking oral or topical steroids or immunosuppressant medicines.

How to use Colourstart
A full explanation is on the package information leaflet which is with your testing kit. A copy of it is also here.
Your Colourstart testing kit has an adhesive patch that contains two small, separate squares. One square contains a small amount of PPD while the other contains no PPD and is used for comparison only.
Apply the patch to an easily visible part of the arm at least 5 days before your colour appointment. The patch should be left on for at least 48 hours (2 days) and then removed.
Wait 20 to 30 minutes after removing the patch then examine your arm to look for any signs of an allergic positive test reaction. If the test is positive, indicating potential allergy to hair colorant, the area under the patch marked A+ will look different to that marked A-.
It is important to continue to look at the area for at least 5 days after the initial application of the patch. This is because PPD sensitivity sometimes causes reactions which may not appear until 4 to 5 days after the application.
If you’ve any questions just call 01273 479945 or pop into the salon and one of our hair professionals will be delighted to help and advise you.
